LDI 2008 to Feature Several Sessions on Green Technology
By Gideon Banner • May 5th, 2008 • Category: ArticlesThis year’s LDI conference, taking place from October 20-26 in Las Vegas, will feature several sessions dealing with green technologies, particularly LEDs. These include:
- LED projection surfaces (Wednesday 10/22, 2:45PM - 4:15PM, Room S223): Open your eyes to a blazing display of LED projection surfaces in this look at a range of current emissive options from textural to high resolution, including LED walls and screens, LED curtains, Barco’s MiTrix, MiSphere & MiStrips, Mainlight’s soft drapes and scrims, and Element Labs‘ newest LED products from Stealth to tubes and tiles. Learn how to select and use these technologies effectively in your projection design.
- New Technology Breakfast: Lighting and Projection (Friday 10/24, 8:00AM - 10:00AM, Room S222 & S223): Illuminate your morning with a look at the latest in lighting and projection technology, from LEDs and luminaries to consoles, fixtures and accessories. Co-hosted by Marian Sandberg, editor, Live Design
- How To Creatively Use LED Video and Lighting Options (Friday 10/24, 2:00PM - 3:30PM, Room S220): Learn about the creative LED video and digital lighting products that exist, how to work with them, and how to integrate them into all types of designs. Top designers from different disciplines will explore all the varying possible applications when making their design decisions. The panel will focus on the creative use of LED technology and the creative options of different LED devices, as well as considerations of content choice, design concepts, and media selection.
- Advanced Lighting and Media Technology in Motion Pictures (Saturday 10/25, 9:00AM -10:30AM, Room S222): Automated lighting, media servers, and LEDs are just a few examples of advanced lighting and media technology that is making a huge impact on the motion picture industry. Join industry professionals in a discussion of how this technology is being used in the motion picture industry and what improvements are needed in order to serve the industry better. Manufacturers and distributors will understand how this technology is being used in motion picture industry and how to improve products for this market. Attendees will get an understanding of the role of the lighting designer in the motion picture process.
- Green Lights for TV Studios (Saturday 10/25, 11:00AM - 12:30PM, Room S222): Lighting and light source technology has changed dramatically over the past decade. LD John Gates looks at a range of television lighting sources that allow you to design your lighting in a more environmentally conscious manner, using energy efficient sources without compromising your design approach. Start with what you can do right now, probably with the lights you already own, then take a look at future options. This is definitely not “one size fits most” lighting. A look at “reel world” energy-efficient, low-voltage quartz, fluorescent, LED, and ceramic discharge light source technology as used by a working television lighting designer. Plus information about the responsible disposal and recycling of lamps at the end of their useful life.
- Going Green 101 (Saturday 10/25, 4:00PM - 5:30PM, Room S220): The issue the industry needs to face is facing the issue. Very few people in the entertainment industry have a serious interest in “going green,” or taking it on as an initiative. What can you do right now that doesn’t impact your budget but has significant benefit to the environment? Where money is spent, how can you insure the best bang for your buck? Should the industry consider regulatory standards in terms of sustainability? As energy prices continue to soar the economics make sustainability a real dollars and cents solution. Bob Usdin of Showman Fabricators moderates a lively panel discussion on the fundamentals of going green.
- The Evolution And Future of LED Lighting (Sunday 10/26, 1:00PM - 2:30PM, Room S221): Advancements in LED technology have resulted in new, large chip, LED light sources capable of delivering thousands of lumens from a single chip, enabling new wash and entry-level spot lighting products to be created. LED benefits of high-reliability, long life, mechanical robustness, ultra-fast strobe and color changing, with a high CRI without heat, color shadowing, or pixilation can be delivered in a homogeneous spot or wash. Enhanced features such as zoom and dimming are easily implemented allowing creative new features to be developed and easily controlled. This intermediate-level course, presented by John Graff, the engineering program manager at Luminus Devices, looks toward the future of LED Lighting.
